AMD Prevention

Our eye care team is dedicated to providing you and your family with “Healthy Vision for Life.” Our optometrists use the most advanced technology to enhance, preserve and protect your precious sight.Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in adults. AMD causes a debilitating loss of central vision, making it difficult or even impossible to read, drive, recognize faces or even watch television. Once vision loss begins, it cannot be reversed, so the best approach is to prevent AMD by reducing your risk of developing macular degeneration. Risk factors for developing AMD include light hair/eyes/skin, being over 50 years old, history of cataract surgery, family history of macular degeneration, smoking, low macular pigment levels and unprotected sun (ultraviolet light) and high-energy blue light exposure.

Pelham Vision is the leader in detecting and treating macular degeneration. Our office is the only office in the state of South Carolina that utilizes the following technology to give you your best vision for your entire life: genetic testing, macular pigment testing, Optovue Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging and glasses that block harmful ultraviolet and high energy blue light.• If you have early signs of macular degeneration, your genetic risk for developing the more severe form of macular degeneration can be assessed with the Macula Risk genetic screening.• We use the macular pigment densitometer, developed by Brown University, to assess the level of natural protection your eyes have against developing macular degeneration. If your level is low, your risk can be reduced by changes in diet or supplementation.• OCT: Our Optovue OCT is an ultra-high-speed, high-resolution Optical Coherence Tomographer that is revolutionizing ocular imaging. We can use it to image the macula in incredible detail, and this technology allows us to detect damage from eye disease far sooner than previous ocular imaging.

• Pelham Vision Center is a provider of BluTech Lens. BluTech Lenses use revolutionary science-based technology to filter harmful ultraviolet rays and high-energy blue light without distorting color perception. A recent Harvard study reveals that high energy blue light can lead to macular degeneration by causing oxidation and deterioration of the macula over a lifetime. BluTech Lenses filter blue-light by using ocular lens pigment combined with melanin to emulate your eyes’ natural defenses. High energy blue light is emitted from fluorescent lighting, computer screens, personal electronic devices such as phones and tablets and high definition televisions. BluTech Lenses are available in prescription and non-prescription indoor and outdoor lenses and will fit into almost any style frame.
